Pennsylvania RR, Pennsylvania Lines, Union Lines. Pennsy installed over 1,600 XLC auto cars between 1906 and 1912. They were 8" taller than the
XL but built on the same underframe. All were delivered with metal roofs and all but the last few
were built before safety appliances. The double side doors used the same plug door mechanism
as the XL; there were no end doors. Like the other cars in the fishbelly side sill family, they were
improved with safety appliances in the 'teens and modernized in the 'twenties. The cars ran up to
mid-1936.
