Operating Era: 1902-1934. Philadelphia & Reading, Reading. P&R installed 1,000 cars in series 16000 in 1902. These were the first 36' cars on the
railroad, following two orders of similar 34' fishbelly side sill cars. Delivered with standard
1900 lettering, the Reading diamond came into use in 1907. Beginning in 1913 the cars
received saftey appliances and T-braces on the end. The full road name came into use about
this time. In 1917 P&R began a program to rebuild the fleet with inverse corrugated ends, a
program that lasted through 1925. The cars ran into the early 1930s before large scale
scrapping began. All were gone by 1935. |
