Operating Era: 1895-1928. Pennsylvania RR, Pennsylvania Lines, Vandalia RR, Canada Southern, Midland Line. The XG was built in 1895-96 with 34' long interior, 5' wheel base 30 ton capacity
trucks, wood bolsters and 4-spoke brake wheels. The XH was built in 1898-1900
to the same dimensions but with 5'6" wheel base 40 ton capacity trucks, steel
bolsters and fluted 5-spoke brake wheels. Over 17,000 were built. Each road
had its own reporting marks.
The cars were renumbered in 1905. Most subsidiaries were reduced to 2" high
initials under PENNSYLVANIA or PENNSYLVANIA LINES. The MCB standards
were stenciled on in 1909 and minor lettering changes made through the 'teens.
System unification in 1920 brought standardized lettering to all cars.
Safety appliances were added in the late 'teens, consisting of ladder grabs on the
sides, extra grabs on the roof and end, and grabs on the end sill. Some cars
acquired steel roofs and some were entirely rebuilt. Detail differences appear
on ventilated and produce cars. Many carswere used in fast freight service.
